Why You Can Trust News Best CarsFrank Nieto is the assistant managing editor of News Best Cars. His goal is to help families and first-time shoppers find the right vehicle. Mazda has a reputation for making affordable cars and SUVs that deliver engaging performance and high-quality interiors. The 2023 CX-5 is no exception to this rule. It has arguably the best all-around performance in the compact SUV class and a cabin that is near-luxury in higher trims. Combine these positives with a robust list of standard safety and comfort features and it represents a great value, which is why we named it our 2023 Best Compact SUV for the enjoyed my week driving the 2023 CX-5 Signature, but there are two areas where it came up short. The CX-5’s infotainment system lacks a touch screen and is controlled with a rotary knob. This controller was frustrating and distracting to use throughout my week with the SUV, as apps like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are designed for touch controls. The cargo area is merely adequate and offers less room than most other compact SUVs, including the 2023 Honda CR-V, Ford Bronco Sport and Hyundai the 2023 Mazda CX-5 a Good SUV? Yes, the 2023 CX-5 is a great SUV. In fact, we named it our 2023 Best Compact SUV for the Money because it has the best combination of quality and value in its class. It boasts an upscale interior with comfy first- and second-row seats, lots of standard safety features and a healthy amount of cargo space. It's agile and comfortable to drive, and its two available four-cylinder engines enable peppy acceleration and decent fuel economy. Better still, the CX-5 is a surprisingly good value. Pricing starts at just under $27,000, and that includes all-wheel drive. Drawbacks are few, but it is worth mentioning that the infotainment system lacks touch-screen functionality. This can complicate some otherwise simple adjustments. Should I Buy the 2023 Mazda CX-5? The well-rounded CX-5 deserves to be a top pick if you're shopping for a small SUV. It simply looks and feels like a much pricier vehicle. That said, the compact SUV segment is jam-packed with compelling alternatives that might be a better fit for you, from the practical Toyota RAV4 and outdoorsy Subaru Forester to the all-new Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-50. You can also find excellent manufacturer incentives on our Mazda deals Mazda CX-5 Versus the Competition Mazda CX-5 vs. Mazda CX-50 The CX-50 is Mazda's newest compact SUV, and it echoes many of the CX-5's highlights. Both SUVs are similarly sized and priced, they have premium interiors with many of the same tech and safety features, and they even offer the same engine choices. Ultimately, both are great options in this class, but there are some differences to note. The CX-50 offers a touch-screen infotainment system, which the CX-5 lacks, and a higher max towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. On the other hand, the CX-5 has a bit more cargo space and a slightly smoother ride. Compare the CX-5 and CX-50 » Mazda CX-5 vs. Honda CR-V The Honda CR-V is all-new for 2023, and it outshines the CX-5 in a few key areas. The CR-V gets superior fuel economy of up to 28/34 mpg city/highway, its interior provides significantly more cargo space, and its touch-screen infotainment system is a bit easier to use. On the other hand, the CR-V is much more expensive than the CX-5 starting at roughly $31,100, its engine tends to drone noisily during passing maneuvers, and it can only tow up to 1,500 pounds 500 less than the CX-5. The right pick for you will likely come down to price or preference. Compare the CX-5 and CR-V » Compare the CX-5, CX-50 and CR-V » CX-5 Interior Finer Things 2023 CX-5 Interior Quality The interior of the 2023 Mazda CX-5 punches well above its price point. It can even give some luxury compact SUVs a run for their money. The cabin has a sleek and sophisticated appearance, and most of the interior surfaces are wrapped with quality materials. Hard plastics are few and far between. Overall build quality is top-notch as well, and the interior does a great job of keeping road and wind noise at bay. 2023 CX-5 Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation Mazda equips every CX-5 with a infotainment display mounted high on the dashboard, which makes it easy to see while driving, and it largely impresses with crisp graphics and prompt responses. That said, it isn't a touch screen. It's controlled by a knob on the center console, as well as a smaller audio volume knob and a few buttons. The layout works fine for adjusting basic settings, but it's a cumbersome way to navigate through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the plus side, the climate controls are intuitive and conveniently placed in the center stack. Standard infotainment features a screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, HD Radio, a four-speaker stereo and a Wi-Fi hot spot Available infotainment features navigation, satellite radio, six- and 10-speaker stereos, wireless device charging and two additional USB ports Additional standard features an analog gauge cluster, remote keyless entry, push-button start and remote start Other available features a partially digital gauge cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, ambient lighting and a moonroof For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto? 2023 CX-5 Cargo Space The CX-5 has cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and cubic feet with these seats folded. That's a fairly small cargo capacity by compact SUV standards, especially next to spacious rivals like the Subaru Forester and Hyundai Tucson. Even so, there's plenty of room for stowing large and small items alike. A manual liftgate comes standard; a power liftgate is available. How Many People Does the 2023 CX-5 Seat? The CX-5 is a two-row SUV with five seats. Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard. Available upgrades include leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with power adjustments, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The CX-5's front seats are supportive and nicely contoured, and there's ample headroom and legroom for taller occupants to stretch out. The range of seat and steering wheel adjustments makes it easy to find a comfortable driving position. Outward visibility is great to the front and sides of the SUV, but the rear sightlines are rather slim. The rear seats have sufficient room for adults to sit comfortably on short trips, but on longer outings the second row is best reserved for kids or teens. 2023 CX-5 and Child Car Seats The CX-5 has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for its ease of use. Though the setup is mostly user-friendly, the lower anchors are set too deeply in the seats. Read more about interior » CX-5 Performance Enjoy the Drive 2023 CX-5 Engine The 2023 Mazda CX-5 features a 187-horsepower four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. A turbocharged version of this engine is available, and it produces up to 256 horsepower on premium gasoline and 227 horsepower on regular gas. The standard engine is perfectly fine for everyday driving. It hustles the CX-5 off the line and around town with respectable verve, and this muscle is maximized by the prompt-yet-smooth shifts of the six-speed automatic. That said, the engine starts to feel out of breath when passing other vehicles on the highway. Zero to 60 mph takes about seconds. The turbocharged engine largely fixes that issue. It's noticeably punchier, both in town and on the highway, and its deeper well of torque makes for snappy passing maneuvers. It also trims the zero-to-60 sprint to just seconds. 2023 CX-5 Gas Mileage The 2023 CX-5 gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, which is average fuel economy for a compact SUV. Models equipped with the turbo engine are rated at 22/27 mpg city/highway. Thriftier alternatives include the Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4. 2023 CX-5 Ride and Handling The CX-5 feels like a much pricier SUV from behind the wheel. Its taut suspension does a nice job of soaking up bumps and dips in the road, resulting in a firm but comfortable ride, and it keeps body lean to a minimum around turns. The steering is quick and nicely weighted, and the brakes slow the SUV confidently. Overall, the CX-5 exhibits a great blend of comfort and sportiness, and it remains one of the best-driving SUVs in this class. 2023 CX-5 Towing Capacity The CX-5 can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. That's an average tow rating for the segment. Read more about performance » CX-5 Reliability Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 Reliable? The 2023 Mazda CX-5 has a predicted reliability score of 82 out of 100. This engine doesn't make the CX-5 particularly efficient, scoring 25/31 mpg city/highway with FWD and 24/30 mpg with it rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels and has LED headlights. Only black and light blue are included as exterior paint colors; metallic white and red are available at extra cost. Inside, the climate control and cloth-upholstered seats are manually adjustable. Two front-row USB ports, a gauge cluster display, and a four-speaker audio system are standard. The second-row seats recline and have fold-down release handles in the cargo in Sport trim, the CX-5's features indicate Mazda's premium approach. The body-color side mirrors have built-in turn signals, and dual chrome-finished exhaust tips look sporty. Inside, the infotainment display is hard to miss, while the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob feel nicer than the plastic parts found in some competitors. Like all CX-5 trims, driver assist and active safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic emergency braking are included. These help the CX-5 earn top safety ratings from the IIHS and its solid dynamic attributes and driver assist tech, the roughly $26,500 CX-5 Sport appeals for an entry-level model. We wouldn't be disappointed to choose it, but it's pretty Mazda CX-5 Touring Pros and ConsThe Touring trim adds features that help the CX-5 feel less stripped out. These include hands-free keyless entry, illuminated sun visor mirrors, a six-speaker audio system, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Up front, the driver's seat gets power adjustability, and both seats gain three-level heating. The second row is upgraded with air vents, a folding center armrest with cupholders, and tinted side windows. All seats are upholstered in leatherette with faux suede accents. Metallic silver and dark blue are added to the standard paint choices, and dark gray becomes available at extra approximately $28,000, the 2021 CX-5 Touring trim adds features that are nice to have but nothing that's absolutely Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition Pros and ConsMazda might like you to think the 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition is some sort of lightweight or extra-sporty model, but it's mechanically identical to any other trim in the lineup. No carbon fiber here—that "Carbon" bit supposedly relates to the common color of the element black, like coal. Indeed, the Carbon Edition's grille, side mirror caps, and 19-inch wheels are finished in black. It's coated exclusively in Polymetal Gray metallic paint, which isn't offered on any other changes include black or red leather seating upholstery, red stitching on the shift knob and steering wheel, and black trim panels. But the Carbon Edition isn't only about styling—it's equipped with a moonroof, power rear liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 10-speaker Bose audio system. The front passenger seat gains power adjustability, and two USB ports are added to the second at just under $30,000, the CX-5 Carbon Edition adds features that boost its daily usability and enjoyment. If it's in your budget, it's worth a look—so long as you vibe with its blacked-out styling Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo Edition Pros and ConsThis trim is just like the CX-5 Carbon Edition but with—you guessed it—a turbocharged engine. It's the first CX-5 trim that's offered with Mazda's turbocharged I-4, which bumps power to as much as 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with premium fuel from 186 hp and 186 lb-ft as standard. It's a significant boost that changes the CX-5's driving demeanor—that is, it's much increased performance decreases fuel economy The Carbon Edition Turbo and other CX-5 trims that use this engine are rated at 23/28 mpg with FWD, and 22/27 mpg with for the 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition Turbo start at just under $32,000. The trim's increased power and torque give it enthusiast appeal. However, the non-turbo Carbon Edition still has fun handling and the same features. It just isn't as Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Pros and ConsThe premium feel increases in the CX-5 Grand Touring trim. It rolls on bright-finished 19-inch wheels and gains upgraded LED lighting headlights with DRL accents and curve-adaptive functionality, front foglights, and taillights. Inside, the seats are upholstered in black or beige leather. The gauge cluster information display increases to inches in size. It's also the first CX-5 trim that includes paddle shifters, which work pretty well to control the somewhat outdated six-speed automatic. Mazda tosses in a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio on the Grand Touring with these features, the roughly $31,500 CX-5 Grand Touring's price slightly undercuts that of the Carbon Edition Turbo. However, the Grand Touring model is equipped with the naturally aspirated engine— Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve Pros and ConsIn Grand Touring Reserve trim, the CX-5 becomes a more worthy competitor to compact luxury SUVs. It's equipped with the turbocharged engine and AWD. Comfort improves by way of the heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. Technology upgrades include a head-up display and infotainment voice command functionality. Power-folding side mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer add just over $37,000, the CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve trim takes a major price hike over the Grand Touring model. With its powertrain and upscale features, that increase seems justified. It's expensive for a CX-5 but a relative bargain against similarly equipped luxury Mazda CX-5 Signature Pros and ConsAs Mazda plots its move upmarket, its luxurious aims are indicated by the range-topping CX-5 Signature trim. Its 19-inch wheels have a dark silver finish, but for some reason metallic silver paint is unavailable. However its interior is covered in lovely dark brown premium leather upholstery, complemented by genuine layered wood trim. Technology enhancements include a 360-degree parking camera system and road sign recognition capability. The interior overhead lights are replaced with LEDs. Front and rear parking sensors and rear automatic braking help prevent scrapes and scuffs. The turbocharged engine and AWD are standard 2021 CX-5 Signature runs for about $38,500, not a huge lift over the Grand Touring Reserve model. But as nice as that brown leather is, we question if that addition and a few others are worth 2021 Mazda CX-5 Model Is Best? The CX-5 is truly an enthusiast's crossover, and for that reason we think it's best when equipped with the punchy turbocharged engine. As such, we're inclined toward the Carbon Edition Turbo trim—it has that power. What it doesn't have is all the upscale features of higher-end models, but the many inclusions make it a compelling value. The Carbon Edition's catch is that it's only available in Polymetal Gray paint, which won't suit everyone's tastes. Regardless, the CX-5's great looks and dynamics make it a worthy rival to SUVs in its class or even those above. .
